Welcome to the Graduate Program of the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign—we are glad you are here and we are looking forward to working with you!

The Graduate Program of the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois is committed to training artists, designers, educators, critics, curators, and historians of visual art and culture at the highest professional levels. The School of Art and Design offers an MFA degree with concentrations in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Metal, Ceramics, and an interdisciplinary Studio which includes concentrations in Painting, Sculpture, and specialization in New Media. The Art Education Program offers an EDM, MA, and PhD degree and the Art History Program offers both an MA and a PhD degree. The School of Art + Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and is regarded as one of the outstanding public university art programs in the United States.

The School of Art + Design has the distinct advantage of being situated within a world-class education and research institution. This larger intellectual and creative campus community adds another dimension to the educational experience, impacting each of our students in an entirely unique fashion. Every corner of campus is open to you—choose electives from among the university's 150 majors and twelve colleges! Within the College of Fine and Applied Arts, graduate students will discover the benefits of close relationship with six academic partners: The School of Architecture, The Department of Dance, The Department of Landscape Architecture, The Department of Theatre, The School of Music, and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. We strongly encourage you to take courses offered through these units and to engage in independent collaborations with the artists and scholars who study and teach in them.

Finally, within the School of Art and Design one will find numerous educational experiences specifically geared to graduate students that include seminars on contemporary art practices and theory to hands-on tutorials in specific material processes. Our departments regularly team up to bring visitors to campus, host colloquia, and sponsor multidisciplinary projects—all of which contribute to your educational experience and better prepare you for your professional future.
